Student Scholarships

The Barrow Community Foundation has given thousands of dollars in student scholarships thanks to the generosity of our community members. We encourage Barrow students to review the scholarships available below. Each year the Foundation presents scholarships to college-bound high schoolers from Barrow’s public schools who need financial assistance.

DEADLINE: All scholarship applications and any attachments must be completed and turned in by February 28th to your high school’s Career Center Coordinator or your Counselor.

Slaughter Educational Scholarship

The Slaughter Educational Scholarship initially began in 1967 through a donation to Barrow County Schools, and these scholarship funds are now managed by The Barrow Community Foundation Inc. The scholarship is awarded annually to one or more graduating high school seniors from Barrow County’s public schools who have been accepted to an accredited college or university and plans to pursue an educational degree.

Amount: Approximately 4%-5% of the scholarship fund are awarded annually, which is about $500-$1,000 per scholarship.

The Barrow Community Foundation General Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded annually to one or more graduating high school seniors from Barrow County’s public schools. The student must be accepted to an accredited four-year college or technical college.

Amount: Approximately 4%-5% of the scholarship fund are awarded annually, which is about $500-$1,000 per scholarship.

The W.H. Jennings Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2001 in memory of Mr. W.H. Jennings’ business & community leadership and his legacy in the Barrow community. An annual award will be made to a graduating senior from Winder-Barrow High School. The student must be enrolled in or accepted to an accredited college or technical college. This scholarship check is given directly to the student per the Jennings family request.

Amount: Approximately 4%-5% of the scholarship fund are awarded annually, which is about $500-$1,000 per scholarship for a WBHS Senior.

The Glenn Segars Scholarship

The Glenn Segars Scholarship was established in 1999 by his wife, Mrs. Anne Segars. The Glenn Segars Scholarship is awarded to one or more graduating high school seniors from Barrow County public high schools, who have been accepted to an accredited four-year college or university. The student must show success in academics, demonstrate involvement in his/her community, and have a need for this scholarship.

Mr. Glenn Segars was a student member and officer of the first Future Farmers of America Chapter chartered in 1929 in the State of Georgia at Statham High School. Mr. Segars would later become a Vocational Agriculture teacher in Barrow County Schools, and the Assistant Commissioner of Agriculture for the State of Georgia.

The Shelia Hawthorne Scholarship

The Shelia Hawthorne Scholarship began in 2020 and is awarded annually to one or more graduating high school seniors from Barrow County’s public high schools. The scholarship is given to assist students pursing a technical or 4 year college degree in healthcare or biological sciences. Community service is also an important component of this scholarship.

The Hawthorne Family were among the founding families of Auburn, GA. Howard and Shelia Hawthorne have contributed significantly to the Barrow Community. Shelia grew up in Kentucky and worked her way through college to become a registered nurse. Later, she attained her teaching certification in science and taught Health Occupations and Biology in New Orleans, LA. In 1989, she joined the faculty of Winder-Barrow High School to teach Health Occupations and received her Specialist degree from the University of Georgia. Shelia has always been devoted to serving the Barrow community through churches and in various non-profits. This began with the Dictionary Project for all 3rd grade students in Barrow’s public schools. Paying it forward, and using their talents in their careers and in community service have been part of the tapestry of the Shelia and Howard Hawthorne’s life.

Scholarship FAQ

How do I apply for a BCF Scholarship?
Please download and complete the application and return it by the February 28th deadline to the Barrow Community Foundation Inc. Scholarship Committee at P. O. Box 1482, Winder, GA, 30680. Alternatively, you may also return the completed application to your public high school’s counselor or career center coordinator for a BCF representative to pick it up from the school by the deadline.

Can I apply for more than one BCF scholarship?
Yes. You will need to complete an application for each scholarship you are applying for and return it by the February 28th deadline.

Is there an interview for the scholarship?
The BCF Scholarship Committee will review all applications. Finalists for scholarships will be contacted to schedule a 15-20 minute in-person interview with the scholarship committee. Following the interviews, the committee will make selections, and students will be notified of the committee’s decisions.

How will the scholarship be awarded?

  1. A member of the BCF Scholarship Committee will attend your high school’s awards day in the Spring to make the public announcement of your award.
  2. You’ll receive a certificate during the awards ceremony.
  3. By the end of May, it is the student’s responsibility to provide their college ID number and mailing address of the Registrar of the College to the BCF Scholarship Committee representative.
  4. Following the student providing his/her college ID number and Registrar mailing address, a scholarship check will be requested from the BCF Treasurer. The check will be mailed directly to the college via United State Postal Service following your high school graduation.
    – Do not wait until just before your college semester begins to provide all of this information.
    – The BCF needs a minimum of 2 weeks to complete these transactions.

How are scholarships given to students?
Scholarships are sent in the student’s name with their college ID number to the registrar of the college, university, or technical school where the student has been accepted. However, the W.H. Jennings Scholarship check is the only check given directly to the student per the Jennings family request.

Can I make a scholarship contribution?

  1. Yes, you may make a scholarship contribution at any time. Please mail a check to The Barrow Community Foundation Inc., P.O. Box 1482, Winder, GA 30680. Please also provide your return mailing address.
  2. You may designate your contribution to the General Scholarship Fund of the Barrow Community Foundation or any other of the named scholarships. Please use the memo section of the check for designating the scholarship fund for your donation.
  3. If no designation is made for the scholarship donation, then it will go into the Barrow Community Foundation General Scholarship Fund.
  4. The Barrow Community Foundation Inc. accepts charitable donations to our general scholarship fund or named scholarship funds of any amount.

How can I start a new named scholarship?

  1. The Barrow Community Foundation Inc. accepts charitable donations of $26,000 and up with $25,000 of the initial donation to be placed in a designated, named scholarship fund, and remaining $1000 allotted for a scholarship(s) to student (s) during the first year of the scholarship.
  2. In year 2 and beyond for the newly named scholarship, approximately 4%-5% of the scholarship fund will be withdrawn to provide an annual scholarship (s) of $500-$1000 per the parameters set forth in the scholarship.
  3. A scholarship committee representative will meet with the donor to outline the desired parameters for the named scholarship, write a description of the scholarship to include on the website and in documentation, and establish the scholarship application form. The scholarship committee will make the annual award of the scholarship(s).
  4. Scholarships are typically awarded by a Barrow Community Foundation representative, during the spring awards day in Barrow’s public high schools.
